МТS AND NOKIA TEST END-TO-END IOT NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE

Wednesday, November 02, 2016

MTS, the leading telecommunications provider in Russia and the CIS, and Nokia, a global leader in the technologies that connect people and things, have for the first time in Russia successfully tested end-to-end IoT solution.

Experts at Nokia and МТS have demonstrated an innovative Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) radio interface, that supports broadband and narrowband device connectivity with the use of new radio chip. New communication standard allows to connect to one base station tens of thousands of devices in difficult radio conditions and operate the devices for several years without batteries replacement due to the greater network capacity, energy efficiency, and high sensitivity of radio modules.

New infrastructure provides fast, cost-efficient, and secure connectivity, as well as integration, management and maintenance of all types of devices with different requirements, such as probes, sensors, meters, and cameras based on single operator's platform.

The tests included such IoT infrastructure use cases as video and acoustic monitoring, industrial data acquisition systems, as well as "smart home" sensors integrated on a single platform.

"Our cooperation with Nokia in breakthrough technologies is gaining momentum. Recently, under our collaboration agreement on 5G and IoT technology development in Russia, MTS and Nokia set data transfer speed at 4.5 Gb/sec. Now, the two companies together have successfully demonstrated the end-to-end IoT solution in live MTS network. The similar solutions will be available to our corporate clients next year for application in different areas and industries including manufacturing, public utilities, management and control, security, smart homes and healthcare. As the leader in the Russian M2M market, MTS actively monitors the latest developments in systems integration market and strives to offer its clients the broadest range of integrated IT and telecom services on a turn-key basis, where IoT solutions will take the central place" - commented Igor Yegorov, Director, Moscow Macroregion, for MTS.

"As part of the previously concluded 5G/IoT collaboration agreement we together with MTS are actively developing and testing new technologies and services. Internet of Things technologies are going to rapidly change our daily lives in all areas, from the professional to the social. The joint demonstration of IoT implemented on commercial equipment has shown the possible IoT application scenarios to improve the quality of our everyday lives that may be deployed in the operator's network and become available to our subscribers in the nearest future," said Demetrio Russo, vice-president, Market Unit East Europe at Nokia.

Test details:

The demonstrated LTE network segment included virtualized core and cloud IoT device management platform, as well as open interfaces for data processing in user applications.

Platform's flexibility in connection to business subscribers, as well as integration with cloud-based resources were enabled by innovative SDN (software-defined network) technology, whereas for retail subscribers the universal PON / Ethernet gateway supporting IoT ZigBee and Z-Wave protocols was used.

MTS and Nokia collaboration in 5G and IoT

Under the collaboration agreement on 5G technology development signed in May 2016, MTS and Nokia are working on a strategic plan of 5G and IoT solutions implementation and will deploy a test 5G network during international sport events in Russia in 2018.

In September 2016, MTS and Nokia successfully carried out the tests of 5G technology achieving a record for Russia 4.5 Gb/sec in 200 MHz bandwidth.

MTS LAUNCHES THE INNOVATION CENTER

Tuesday, November 01, 2016

MTS launches the Innovation Center, a department that brings a new approach to business development through the launch of new products and services. The Center uses a flexible methodology for service development (the agile-methodology). The establishment of the Innovation Center will enable the timeline for launching new products to be reduced by 3-4 times.

The agile-methodology assumes an interactive development of services, with a dynamic formation of tasks and execution by a team of experts with diverse profiles. Agile-teams are at the heart of the organizational structure of the Innovation Center. For each single project, a unique group is formed with employees from the company’s various departments to work exclusively on it - from the research stage to its commercial launch. The Innovation Center will unite the expertise of the entire MTS Group. The project teams will include experts from MTS, MTS Bank, NVision Group, MGTS and other subsidiaries. In order to reduce the timeline for introduction of new services to the market the company is also simplifying the key business-processes involved in their development.

The pioneer projects of the Innovation Center will be in the area of Cloud Services and e-Health.

Vladimir Khrenkov has been appointed as the head of the new department. Prior to this, he served as a Divisional Director within the Strategy, M&A and Corporate Development Department. The Innovation Center is under the direct supervision of MTS’s President.

“MTS is not a traditional telecom operator anymore,” states Vladimir. Nowadays, we are successfully working in complementary areas such as IT. We offer a broad pool of proprietary mobile apps and services to our corporate clients at the crossroads of IT and telecommunications. These and other services beyond standard telecom products look promising. Such transformation assumes a faster response to changes in the dynamic markets where we operate. By launching our own Innovation Center, we are choosing a distinctive approach to service development through a combination of expertise, experience and professionalism under the leading telecommunications company in Russia with the simplicity of a start-up business process.”

МТS DEVELOPS ITS MONOBRAND RETAIL NETWORK IN MOSCOW BASED ON BIG DATA

Tuesday, October 04, 2016

Moscow, Russian Federation – PJSC MTS (NYSE: MBT; MOEX: MTSS), the leading telecommunications operator in Russia, announces the launch of a pilot project to utilize an impersonal analysis of high volumes of data for the development of its monobrand retail networks.

By the end of 2016, MTS intends to open 10 monobrand retail outlets in Moscow, and the company will determine the location and the format of these outlets using Big Data technology. The multifactorial system of data analysis that MTS employs will allow the company to identify the most advantageous location, the best format, and the most favorable product portfolio for each outlet.

By using Big Data for retail development, MTS has an opportunity to study consumer traffic in the area of the proposed outlet and analyze it objectively on a number of indicators. These include:

Social and demographic factors;

The types of devices and operating systems being used;

Subscribers’ financial activity in the surrounding area;

The duration of a subscriber’s presence in the vicinity;

The number of roaming subscribers;

Volumes of voice and mobile internet traffic;

The concentration of the digital environment and popular internet resources.

Taking all of this information into account, experts at MTS can determine the appropriate size of each outlet and the number of employees required to staff it.  They can then select the portfolio of devices and accessories, plan sales and promotion activities, and identify the outlet’s priorities from the mobile, fixed, and banking services that MTS offers.

Igor Egorov, Director for the Moscow Region said, “The preliminary results of our Big Data analysis are very encouraging, though a little surprising, because they suggest new locations for outlets that differ from those initially considered. We decided to test this method in actual conditions as we believe it will improve the quality of service we provide for our subscribers and satisfy their expectations regarding the portfolio of products and services that we offer.”

MTS Retail network in Russia

MTS’s proprietary retail network is the largest non-grocery retail chain in Russia. In H1 2016, the number of MTS outlets grew by 30% year-on-year to 5,700 stores. Since the start of 2016, MTS has long been cooperating with brands such as Beats, Celly, Meizu, BQ, Highscreen, Prestigio, while other brands, including Huawei, Samsung, Asus, HTC, Alcatel, Philips, JBL, Sennheiser, Plantronics, and Jabra, have all increased their supply volumes.

RESEARCH ON ROAMING IN RUSSIA DURING THE SUMMER

Thursday, September 29, 2016

This summer season, tourists travelling within Russia increased their usage of mobile data by 2.5x compared to the previous year. Mapping services became the most popular apps.

Tourism within Russia became more popular this summer: Russian tourists travelled outside their home region 5% more often than during the previous summer, while the average stay in other regions increased from seven to eight days. In autumn, average trips outside of one’s home region usually last between 3-5 days.

Every second traveler in Russia is an active mobile internet user, while 90% of those users browse using a smartphone. Only 7% of tourists use a tablet for this purpose. The average number of roaming mobile data users increased 15% over last summer. Total data consumption by tourists increased by 2.5x.

In summer 2016, the profile of internet consumption during vacations changed. For the first time, mapping services became the content category with the highest demand; traffic to these servers tripled y-o-y and reached up to 7.2 petabytes. Social networks were the second most popular content category, as measured by the volume of traffic consumption, followed by video content.

Access to mapping services via a smartphone has become a fundamental requirement for travelers. Smartphones now serve as a navigator during road trips in Russian provinces and are used as a tool to explore urban areas in search of local sights. Some maps, such as those provided by Yandex and Wikimapia, even contain unique content created by local residents.

Traditional mobile services were also in demand: the total amount of outgoing calls increased 1.3x y-o-y, while the number of outgoing SMS messages rose by 10%.
