MTS 2016 Sustainable Development Report: Improving the quality of life is a cornerstone of sustainable future.

понедельник, октября 16, 2017

The title of the recently published MTS 2016 Sustainable Development Report reflects the key goal of  our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy: to improve the quality of life and safety for its subscribers and the entire society by developing innovations and providing a wide range of services. As is now customary, in our 9th Sustainable Development Report, MTS provides detailed information on our activities, progress and results across the various CSR aspects – environmental, social and corporate – during the reporting period.

Highlights from the 2016 Report include:

INNOVATION

Digitization is changing our life. MTS is supporting this change by developing innovative digital products to enrich and simplify our life experience including smart car insurance programs and Remote Data Reading solutions for housing and communal services. In 2016, MTS launched an integrated Smart House project, consisting of a set of tools to convert any apartment or house into an intelligent living environment. Last year, we also launched Wi-Fi Calling in Russia, which allows our subscribers to use MTS voice services on any available Wi-Fi network.

Beginning in 2011, we have been the proud organizer of the annual open industry competition “Telecom Idea”. In 2016, the competition expanded its borders: events were held in 18 cities across Russia and collected more than 500 projects.

In 2016, MTS established a new department, the Innovation Center, totally devoted to the development of innovative products and services in areas such as Clouds, e-health, Smart Education and e-Sport. Last year, we also launched a new program to develop employee ideas and turn them into business projects, the Innovation Workshop.

EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS

We strongly feel that everyone, regardless of age, background or education, should be able to participate in digital society. Media literacy is key here, which is why MTS is involved in a variety of educational projects that help children, young people as well as adults to use new technologies safely and with confidence.

In 2016, we continued with a number of educational projects such as “Network for All Ages”, “Mobile Academy of MTS” and “Children Teaching Adults”, designed to increase internet literacy among the older generation and promote the integration of modern information technologies into everyday life.

For our younger audience, with the support of a variety of other partners, MTS has been running “Children on the Internet”, a program launched in 2011 for the purpose of promoting rules governing convenient and safe use of the Internet among children, parents and teachers. Since its inception, more than 340,000 students in more than 30 Russian regions underwent training as part of the project.

CHARITY AND VOLUNTEERING

Russia’s largest charitable project, “Generation M” is aimed at fostering children’s creativity while simultaneously raising funds for the treatment of severely-ill children. Today the project has over 100 informational partners across Russia and its internet audience exceeds 11 mln people.

Over the past six years, MTS has been supporting the Corporate Volunteer Movement “JUST Give Good!” which aims to provide urgent assistance to children afflicted by serious illness. Launched in 2011, the program has proved extremely successful and today it involves around 6,000 MTS employees, who organized over 500 events in 2016.

We are proud to say that the total expenditures of MTS Group on charity projects reached RUB 515.5mln in 2016.

ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES

Pro-active development of MTS’ network improves the quality of mobile Internet and voice offering, allowing the launch of various innovative and helpful IoT services on our network. In a real-life example from 2016, MTS partnered with Tsentrleskhoz to arrange for video monitoring of the forest fire situation on the territory of the Moscow Region Forestry, making firefighting efforts significantly more effective.

As part of the implementation of the overall strategy for MTS to be an environmentally friendly business, we have decided to use eco-friendly packaging for our SIM cards. The first commercial shipments started in 2015, and since 2016, our SIM cards are only sold in eco-friendly packaging.

In 2016, our total expenses related to environmental initiatives amounted to RUB 14.4 mln.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

We are always looking to improve our corporate governance systems, constantly monitoring our efficiency and looking for to implement best practices. To remain at the forefront of corporate governance culture, in 2016 we launched an e-voting service allowing our shareholders to directly vote online.

MTS is actively developing a uniform compliance system in line with applicable legislation, recommendations of regulatory authorities, and international best practice. In 2016, MTS adopted the Compliance Policy of MTS PJSC.

CULTURAL PROJECTS

We also design and promote innovative cultural projects. Our “Mobile Library” and “Mobile Guide” initiatives offer an easy, quick and free way to download a favorite book or listen to a personal audio-tour using a QR code.

HEALTHCARE

MTS Group supports its employees in leading a healthy lifestyle. Our comprehensive program, “Go in for Sports with MTS”, encourages employee participation in our football, basketball and volleyball teams, as well as the MTS Running movement. In 2016, the Company established a cycle club # VeloMTS.

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT

Recognizing the importance of human capital in the development of our business, MTS invests considerable resources towards career development and education initiatives for our employees. In 2016, our personnel training and development system was recognized the Best in Russia and received several coveted awards.  We operate a Corporate University that offers internal, external and long-distance education aimed at professional and personal development. Last year, MTS reintroduced its Virtual Academy, a unique training platform for individual development with a large choice of webinars, online courses and workshops.

2013 REPORT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

четверг, октября 02, 2014

We have recently published an English-language version of our 2013 Report on Sustainable Development, which details how changes in MTS’s strategy have impacted its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy.

In 2013, as we continued transitioning  from a voice-based solutions focus into a truly integrated communications operator, our CSR strategy expanded to not only focus on issues such as community support, education and environmental protection, but also responsible use of data. We are proud of this evolution and of our CSR impact in 2013, which included earmarking RUB 829 million (USD 23 million) for charitable goals and programs.

MTS ties its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy to its goal of improving people’s quality of life and encouraging social progress. From 2009 to 2013, MTS had based its strategy on three themes analogous to its 3i Strategy – integration, and long-term support to local communities; Internet by focusing on safe and beneficial access to and use of the worldwide web; and innovation by embracing new ideas and supporting youth talent. In 2014, as the Company now embraces its new role as an integrated communications operator with an expanded focus on mobile and Internet, its CSR strategy will focus on data through its support of new ideas, youth talent and responsible use of Internet and mobile communications; differentiation by supporting programs designed to expand services and improve quality; and dividends through the standardization of CSR processes and emphasis on greater transparency.

Highlights from the 2013 Report on Sustainable Development include:

·         MTS spent RUB 829 million (USD23 million) in contributions toward charitable initiatives, many which primarily assist and support children.

·         MTS continued to support the “Eco-Office” project, a program that educates stakeholders about sustainability and the environment. In 2013, the Company implemented the following projects throughout its facilities and offices in Russia and the CIS: the collection of batteries and recyclables; MTS’s “Save a Tree” campaign, the “Living Planet” drawing contest for children, the “Eco-Airlift” Saturday cleanup, and an international flower and garden festival.

·         MTS continued its “Web for All Ages” program, which aims to enhance Internet literacy of people over the age of 40, and popularize modern information technologies and helpful online services.

·         MTS continued its support of the Deti Online (Children Online) program in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, the RF Ministry of Education and Science, the Safe Internet League and others. It focuses on highlighting the rules of safe and beneficial Internet use among children, parents and educators. Since the program’s inception in 2011, more than 200,000 people have participated in the initiative’s measures, such as interactive themed exhibitions at Russia’s leading museums and libraries, Internet literacy classes for young schoolchildren, and teacher seminars.

·         MTS, in partnership with its parent company, Sistema JSFC, and Ministry of Telecommunications of the Russian Federation, hosted the third “Telecom Idea” competition that supports open innovations and aims to encourage the involvement of students, young scientists, designers and startup-entrepreneurs with MTS. The event focused on the utilization of broadband mobile and fixed Internet capabilities as well as the monetization of data transmission.

MTS APPLYING ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TO BASE STATIONS

среда, июля 15, 2009

Windmill powering base station in Karelia, Russia.

In our continuous efforts to improve operating efficiency, MTS is increasingly looking towards alternative solutions to minimize energy consumption. In the coming months, MTS will install pilot base stations in the Crimea peninsula in the Southern Ukraine that will be powered by environmentally friendly wind generators. We have purchased wind turbines from the US-based Bergey Windpower and have already begun the deployment.

In line with our reputation for innovation, MTS is the first operator in Ukraine to explore the potential of energy solutions friendly to the environment. The first base stations will be installed in Crimea and later in the Western Ukraine, as strong winds in these regions are present throughout the year. Such alternative energy solutions allow us to economize spending as electricity costs rise or deploy network solutions in areas underserviced by a lack of power infrastructure.

We have long been exploring alternative energy sources in Russia. For instance, as pictured above, one of our base stations in the northern Karelia region is powered by wind, while in the southern Krasnodar region we have deployed solar cells. In the Moscow region, we are testing unique solutions with hydrogen power cells.

3+1 PROJECT IN BASHKIRIA

среда, июля 01, 2009
Today we have launched a unique pilot project in the Republic of Bashkortostan (Bashkiria), whereby subscribers are offered mobile and fixed telephony as well as broadband Internet services under the MTS brand on a single bill. These services are provided on an opt-in basis to both private and corporate subscribers, offering the ease of use of a single billing system and the greater affordability of the bundled solution.

In Bashkiria, we have deployed one of the fastest broadband solutions currently available, FTTC / VDSL2, with download speeds of up to 100 Mbit / second. This type of connection allows us to bring a multitude of services to subscribers, including HDTV, broadband Internet and fixed telephony. We aim to launch IPTV services in Bashkiria this year as well.

We are the first company in Russia to offer one bill for mobile services, fixed telephony and broadband Internet. We are launching a range of tariff plans for each service with discounts for choosing multiple options. For instance, subscribers to all three services will have a 20% discount on the total bill, and subscribers to two services will get a 10% discount.

We have been developing convergent solutions in Bashkiria since the acquisition of Bashcell in late 2007. Bashcell had the licenses and the networks to provide fixed-line telephony and broadband access, which we have since successfully upgraded to offer best-in-class bundled solutions.

The pilot project in Bashkiria will help us test the demand for convergent solutions in Russia and develop a better customer proposition for future deployment in the country. Given the low penetration of broadband and the reputation of our Company, we believe that bringing high-speed Internet service will be one the key drivers of our growth in the future.

More information about the 3+1 tariffs and services is available here (in Russian).

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN ARMENIA

пятница, июня 26, 2009
Corporate Social Responsibility is not a common term in our markets of operations, but this is mostly due to the difficulty of translation rather than a lack in effort.

The essential function of our company is to provide people with easy and affordable access to some of the most advanced communications channels such as mobile telephony, data and the Internet. With an ambition to become a communications provider of choice, MTS is keen to support activities aimed at improving the lives of communities in our markets of operations. More about our CSR policy can be found here.

Our Armenian subsidiary provides a great case study of a local CSR effort. VivaCell-MTS is one of the most admired companies in Armenia as has been shown in its ability to gain market share and build strong relationships with the subscribers

VivaCell-MTS takes deliberate efforts to integrate CSR activities in its day-to-day operations in order to ensure resilient economic and social ties with the local community.

In 2008, our efforts in Armenia were primarily directed at the rural development under the “VivaCell-MTS to the regions” program. MTS helped to connect the local villages to gas and water supply systems, as well as renovate a number of schools and hospitals. In doing so, we were able to provide the population with much needed utilities such as electricity and heating.

In 2009, the theme for our social activities is “VivaCell-MTS to children” that will concentrate on the education, health and overall children’s well-being. We are already actively involved in programs to lower child mortality rates and in promoting environment education in schools throughout Armenia. Given the importance of social, health, environment and other projects to VivaCell-MTS, the Company has formally decided to rename Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into Corporate Responsibility (CR), highlighting the fact that our activities spread beyond pure social programs.
