MTS CITED AS FASTEST GROWING INTERNET PROVIDER IN RUSSIA

вторник, февраля 16, 2016

Vedomosti reports today that according to a report by TMT Consulting, MTS was the fastest growing Internet provider in Russia in 2015. The report suggests that MTS increased its customer base of high-speed internet users by 7% year-over-year to 2.8 mln customers. Overall in Russia, the number of customers connected to high-speed internet rose 3.6% versus 5% in 2014.

Key drivers for MTS’s market-leading growth include the modernization of its regional networks, which allowed MTS to expand its base by upselling its customers, many of whom use analogue pay-TV solutions, FTTB (Fiber-to-the-Building) high-speed internet solutions. In 2015, MTS also completed its GPON project in Moscow, which allows its subsidiary, MGTS, to offer speeds of up to 1 GB/s to its customers.

SALES IN THE MTS ONLINE SHOP DOUBLE IN H1 2012

четверг, августа 16, 2012

Russia has the largest online population in Europe – 60 million – and 15 million online shoppers. According to the data presented at the “RIF + KIB 2012" conference, there are 30,000 online stores in the Russian Internet. In total they generate $9 billion per year or 1.5% of all retail sales in Russia, which is four times less than in the U.S. and three and a half times less than in Europe. Yet the Russian e-commerce market is growing 30-50% each year and is projected to reach $16 billion by 2016.

MTS stands to tap this potential by enhancing capabilities of its online store www.shop.mts.ruMTS is leveraging its resources as the second largest mobile retail network in Russia with streamlined logistics chains connecting 2,500 stores in over 1,000 population centers. In the first half of 2012, online sales doubled driven by the rising demand for smartphones. Smartphones currently account for 70% of online sales, portable electronic devices (including notebooks, tablets, e-readers, cameras) generate 15% of sales, basic and feature phones account for 12% of sales, and the remaining 3% of sales consist of accessories. In the first half of 2012, MTS expanded its portfolio of devices by making 300 models of phones and smartphones and over 650 models of portable electronic devices available online.

MTS delivers orders made online to 80 of Russia’s 83 regions. Most popular among customers is MTS’s “pick up in store” service, which accounts for 85% of orders. Currently, purchases are delivered “to the door” in 14 of Russia’s largest cities, but given the rising appetite of Russian customers for online shopping, the list of these cities is set expand quickly.

GOOGLE’S ACQUISITION OF MOTOROLA MAY LEAD TO HANDSET COST REDUCTIONS IN BRIC COUNTRIES

пятница, сентября 09, 2011

Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility is being greeted warmly in Russia and other emerging markets.  The high price of smartphones is a real barrier to widespread adoption in emerging markets because mobile phones are not subsidized like they are in the U.S. – i.e. no 2-year contracts.  In Russia and other emerging markets consumers pay full price for a phone unlike in U.S.

So with the Motorola acquisition Russians are seeing some real bright points. With Google making a bigger commitment to Android via Motorola:

•    the price point for the higher-quality handsets might will be lower and they will be made more available for the average consumers;
•    BRIC countries will receive an infusion of innovation and experience higher usages levels;
•    the impact of better mobiles can be expected to be that much greater given that emerging markets tend to rely more on mobile devices (and all the information and connectivity that brings along) than desktop computers.

This deal will prove to be a tremendous boost to the telecommunications industry given that it will increase competition – thereby, enabling consumers to have access to better and more economically priced mobile phones.

Do you all think this deal is a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down?

TELECOM WORLD CONGRESS: FAVORITE SESSIONS

пятница, июля 01, 2011

Last week I attended Telecom World Congress 2011, where I was invited to speak about infrastructure investment. There are few countries in the world where the topic takes higher priority than Russia, and given that we cross nine time zones, probably no nation where the challenge is more daunting. So it was a privilege to share with global telecom leaders which technologies we’re finding most cost effective, and how we’re managing network capacity through fair usage policies and traffic optimization (see presentation below).

The conference lasted three days, and regrettably I was only able to attend the last one. But I attended some informative sessions and thought I’d share my favorites.

Monetizing Broadband
Karl-Michael Henneking and Jochen Dinger from Detecon gave their insights on the options telcos have to capture shares of the “over-the-top” business. They have highlighted mobile video calling, telepresence services, video game streaming and IPTV as services with a significant revenue potential for telcos. One approach they suggest is locking in customers with a convenient to use platform of services, e.g. with a single set top box supporting a broad range of applications from IPTV and video on demand services to gaming, which eventually establishes a smart hub in customers’ homes. This is an option MTS has already started exploring with a launch of online media portal Omlet.ru with a unique portfolio of thousands of movies from Russian and major Hollywood studios. As demand for the legal video content in Russia grows, we are improving Omlet’s infrastructure, having recently enabled users to store purchased content in the cloud and stream it to devices including PC or Mac computers, smartphones, set-top boxes and TV-sets.

Telecom Operators Role in Convergence
The panel discussion with Portugal Telecom’s Manuel Rosa da Silva and Level 3’s Daniel Sjoberg focused on how telecom operators are becoming key players in the converged world. It echoed the main theme of the conference of how telecom operators are moving away from traditional voice services towards new revenue growth streams. Manuel was very optimistic about our function here. He showed how telecom operators can become more than “dumb pipes” by launching innovative content offerings and leveraging customers’ demand for non-linear multi-screen experience. Again, very much like what we are trying to achieve with Omlet.ru.

MTS LAUNCHES FIRST GLONASS PHONE

вторник, апреля 12, 2011

We have recently launched the МТS Glonass 945, the first mobile phone that supports both the U.S. Global Positioning System (“GPS”) and Russia’s Glonass navigation system. Glonass (“Global Navigation Satellite System”) operated by the Russian Space Forces has a constellation of 24 operational satellites, which cover 100% of Russian territory and 98% of world’s territory. Combining Glonass and GPS significantly increases reliability and precision of the location-based services, which helps users navigate through extreme topography and in the cities with tall buildings that could block the transmissions of some satellites.

The new smartphone has a multi-touch screen and runs on the Android 2.2 operating system. It costs RUB 10 490 when purchased with an MTS tariff.

Pre-installed MTS Navigator app features in-car and “pedestrian mode” directions, complete with 3D moving maps, audio guidance with street name articulation, and thousands of points of interest including restaurants, bars and hotels. MTS Navigator is one of the many location-based services MTS offers to its subscribers. MTS Locator is used for tracking whereabouts of friends and family members, while the Mobile Employees service helps corporate customers to pinpoint location of its employees and vehicles. With MTS Parking, if you have parked your car in the wrong place, and it has been evacuated, you will receive an SMS with directions where to go to get it back. More than 1.2 million of the Company’s subscribers are already using MTS location-based services, and we expect the demand for such services to grow further as more GPS- and Glonass-enabled devices come to market.

OMLET.RU TIES UP WITH KINOPOISK.RU

понедельник, февраля 14, 2011

We are happy to announce that we have recently signed a cooperation agreement between MTS-owned content portal Omlet.ru and KinoPoisk.Ru, the largest and most popular online movie database in Russian.

Omlet.ru content portal was launched by MTS in the fall of 2009, offering a large selection of licensed movies, music and games for mobile and computer users. There are about 1,000 movies and TV series available on Omlet.ru today, both Russian and foreign, including a selection of Disney, Universal, and Paramount Pictures movies, and the catalogue is constantly updated with new releases and classic hits. The functionality of KinoPoisk.Ru (translated in Russian as “movie search”) is somewhat similar to imdb.com as it contains information on actors, production crew personnel and enables users to search and rate movies, post reviews and chat.

Under the agreement, links to Omlet.ru have been added to movie descriptions on the KinoPoisk.Ru website, which will enable users to purchase or rent movies they like in a matter of just a few clicks. KinoPoisk.Ru also now features a list of the most popular movies according to the Omlet.ru statistics.

MTS expects that the partnership with KinoPoisk.Ru will expand the Omlet.ru audience - that currently stands at 1.5 million unique visitors a month - by around 100 000 with 15% of the new users regularly purchasing content.

MTS LAUNCHES LTE IN ARMENIA

среда, декабря 22, 2010

We are pleased to announce that VivaCell-MTS, a majority-owned subsidiary of MTS in Armenia, has recently launched a special LTE test zone in central Yerevan. This will enable VivaCell-MTS subscribers to test this innovative technology with modems that support the 4G standard. This is the first step in a full-scale nationwide network roll-out. MTS is building the network in cooperation with the leading international suppliers - Ericsson and Huawei.

LTE is a “fourth generation” technology that is more advanced than 3.5G/HSPA and HSPA+ technologies already deployed in Armenia. 4G network allows for up to 150 Mbps download and up to 50 Mbps upload rates.

Armenia is the second country where MTS is building a LTE network. In July 2010, MTS became the first mobile operator to launch a 4G network into commercial operation in Uzbekistan.

MODERNIZING MGTS’ NETWORK IN MOSCOW

четверг, октября 14, 2010

It was recently announced that the Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS), the incumbent PSTN operator in Moscow and owned by Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) through its majority ownership of Comstar-UTS, will invest RUB 13 billion in the modernization of its fixed line network between now and 2013. The digitalization will allow the company to decrease its maintenance costs for analogue exchanges, modernize its business processes, optimize employee levels and boost overall efficiency.

We asked Sergey Ivanov, the CEO of MGTS, to elaborate on what the company plans to accomplish through the modernization program.

What is the percentage of digital lines in the MGTS network, and when does the company plan to complete the digitalization process?

As of the beginning of 2010, 63% of our active lines were digitalized. If we maintain the current pace of modernization, we will be able to reach the 100% level by the end of 2013.

How are you going to utilize the space that will become free following the replacement of analogue equipment with digital lines?

A significant effect from the execution of our modernization program will be the freeing up of space from under the automatic telephone exchanges through use of more compact equipment. We are already leasing out 50 000 sq. meters of office and utility space, which brings in more than RUB 0.5 billion of extra revenue annually. We expect this number to increase to up to RUB 2 billion during 2011-2013 as we continue to modernize the network. We are considering different options of utilizing unoccupied spaces, most of which are located in areas with significant investment potential, including leasing out the space outright, leasing it out after making minimal investments, or modernizing the space before leasing it out.

Starting this year, the numbering capacity being introduced is based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology. Which new services will be made available to subscribers with the introduction of this technology, and when do you expect to launch them?

Based on this technology, an IMS gateway will be installed in each apartment that will provide access to modern fixed-line services (landline, Internet access, and IPTV) as well as additional high quality services (caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, SMS, etc.).

How does MGTS as the main provider of fixed-line services and a key player in the broadband market benefit from the IMS technology?

IMS is a technology that enables us to simultaneously digitalize the MGTS network and to deliver broadband access to every single apartment in Moscow. Every apartment connected using the IMS technology will have broadband access – both fixed broadband and wireless using Wi-Fi – on top of the regular landline. Once the IMS gateway is installed, it becomes much easier to connect various services, in fact it is already connected, and it is only a matter of actually starting to use it. The IMS technology enables us to significantly decrease investments in network digitalization and to employ innovative technologies.

The MTS infrastructure also uses the IMS technology. Are there any synergies to be realized from MGTS introducing IMS?

The IMS architecture provides a base for convergent solutions for both fixed and mobile services. At this stage we are building up the technological base, but subsequently we will be offering our subscribers convergent solutions, including IMS-based ones.

How will MTS boost sales through integration with MGTS? How does the Group cross-sell services and which bundled offerings will be available to the subscribers?

Already today customers can pay for MGTS’ fixed-line services (local and long distance calls, broadband and TV) and MTS’ mobile services using a unified MGTS bill; payments can be made in the MTS stores. In addition, MTS SIM-cards are distributed in the MGTS offices. In early 2010 sales of a broadband package from MGTS were launched through the MTS retail chain. In the future we will be offering more bundled services.

EASYPAYMENT FROM MTS

пятница, октября 08, 2010

We have recently launched in Russia a new service called EasyPayment. The subscribers can now pay for different  services, both MTS’s and other companies’ using their mobiles by transferring funds from either their bank or personal accounts with MTS. EasyPayment allows payments for municipal services, cable TV, landline, Internet and many others with low to no commission.

Each transaction takes 1-2 minutes with the minimum transaction amount equal to RUB 10 and the maximum to RUB 15,000 for payments from a MTS personal account and up to RUB 30,000 for payments using a bank account.

The user interface for payments allows a greater degree of flexibility as subscribers can now use special applications developed for handsets on the Windows Mobile, Symbian and iPhone operating systems. The Android version is currently being developed. The applications can be downloaded following receipt of a SMS message containing a link to the download page. iPhone users can find the application in the Apple App Store. The subscribers also can make payments using a web-portal or the USSD-service*.

For EasyPayment, MTS partnered with the Bank of Moscow, 1st Processing Bank, a supplier of e-commerce solutions Intervale and the QIWI payment system.

EasyPayment is an improvement from a previous service MTS-Pay that was launched in October 2008 and allowed subscribers to only transfer funds using their bank accounts. In June 2010 we won the prestigious Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award in the “Consumer bank-card innovation” for MTS-Pay.

We consider the mobile payment market in Russia to have good growth prospects on the back of strong existing demand. Given the country’s high wireless penetration and the relatively low credit card penetration and indeed use, services such as MTS’ EasyPayment that allow to use mobile accounts to make payments could play an important part in the development of mobile commerce in Russia. Our projects in this field include money transfers (launched in April 2010); as well as the partnership with the Moscow Metro allowing passengers to buy  tickets using their mobiles at the turnstiles utilizing the NFC** technology (tentative launch at the end of 2010).

* USSD - Unstructured Supplementary Service Data.
** NFC - Near Field Communication.
