MTS HAS LAUNCHED ITS OWN IoT PLATFORM TO OFFER TO BUSINESS CLIENTS ACROSS RUSSIA

MTS is the first mobile operator in Russia to launch an integrated IoT platform on national scale. Our IoT platform provides an integrated solution to manage objects embedded with network connectivity and pro-actively monitor IoT-enabled equipment performance. The platform has an open API (application programming interface) and supports various data networks. Accordingly, our clients’ existing equipment and IT systems can be directly connected with up-to-date sensors, cameras, robots and programs. The objects connecting to the platform can be managed from a single center, regardless of their location, which will be of substantial benefit to many of our clients in Russia who have operations in the areas that are traditionally difficult to reach.

MTS is the first mobile operator in Russia to create an IoT platform of this scale. Having pioneered the Machine-to-Machine communications in Russia with the introduction of the first M2M tariff, we are confident that this new offering will be in strong demand by the market.

Developing our own IoT platform is another step in the MTS strategy to be the go-to provider in helping business customers adapt quickly and efficiently to the fast-changing requirements of the digital economy, reduce their costs and bring their operations to a new level. For government customers, our IoT platform can become a driver for development of smart cities, smart grids and intelligent transportation.

In addition to being the largest telecom company in Russia, MTS has consistently been the clear leader in the Russian IoT market by number of connected devices. In the coming years, we will strengthen our presence in the IoT segment through open source platforms, cloud applications and the introduction of the Internet of things at any scale - from small stores, to large factories, cities and federal networks.

Our IoT architecture can support equipment across a variety of industries including manufacturing, energy and diversified service companies. The platform is also applicable for integrated IoT solutions for agriculture, logistics, commercial real estate and other businesses. Our equipment monitoring system allows our clients to anticipate wear-and-tear as well as potential malfunctions before the deterioration reaches a critical stage. Notifications can be sent via the client’s computer system, but also by SMS and e-mail. This will substantially reduce cost of maintenance and prevent losses related to equipment failure.

The platform also includes an integrated and comprehensive “Smart Metering” solution, replacing an earlier system using telematics enabled M2M SIM cards. MTS is a pioneer among Russian telecom operators to launch this service. One of the real business cases is the implementation of Smart Metering from MTS for a vegetable storage. Our solution allows our client to control the temperature and moisture level in the boxes where the vegetables are stored. As a result, the customer is confident in the storage conditions and the percentage of spoilage has decreased.

Cyber security is always at the core of all our technological innovation. Connected to secure communication channels, our IoT sensors and controllers can send data to a fully protected MTS cloud, where they are processed in real time and then sent to secure cloud storage. Equipment monitoring and reports generation can be done in a web user interface or in standard programs by connecting them to the MTS IoT platform using API procedure. MTS IoT platform uses secure SSL and HTTPS encryption protocols, as well as a network antivirus and a cyber threat protection center.

 

MTS in the IoT market 

MTS is the leader in the IoT market in Russia in terms of the number of telematics SIM cards, according to AC&M research in 2016. MTS is also the first telecommunications company in Russia that regularly promotes the IoT-based product portfolio in the national scale. In 2009, MTS offered its customers the first telematics solution for vehicle monitoring. In 2011, we launched "M2M Manager" solution, which allows any device in real time to configure and monitor the MTS network, the work of various M2M-equipment. In 2016 and 2017, MTS tested NB-IoT and LPWAN technologies and deployed the IPv6 architecture on the network, which allows almost unlimited number of devices to be connected to the Internet.

MTS AND ERICSSON SECURE NEW RECORD DATA SPEED FOR RUSSIA DURING 5G TEST

Moscow, Russian Federation – PJSC MTS (NYSE: MBT, MOEX: MTSS), the leading telecommunications operator in Russia and the CIS, and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), the world leader in information and communication technologies, announce the successful trial of 5G technology, during which data transfer speed reached a record of up to 25 Gbps for the first time in Russia on a movable prototype of a smartphone. Previously, all 5G trials were conducted only between stationary devices.

Testing was conducted at Moscow’s ‘Opening Arena’ stadium, where a base station operating in the range of 14.5-15.3 GHz transmitted a signal to a movable prototype of a subscriber’s at the speed of 25 Gbps. This data transfer speed allows just for 18 days to transfer absolutely all traffic of all MTS subscribers that they exchanged during 2016 - including downloading and streaming of movies, video calls, Internet surfing, downloading and transferring media files. The total volume of traffic that MTS subscribers transferred in 2016 is 1,206 Pb.

As part of the trials, MTS and Ericsson experienced other possibilities and advantages of 5G technology for various scenarios: online video streaming in 4K format, as well as virtual reality services and remote robot control over a mobile network that require ultra-small delays and high data rates.

"The tests showed an absolute record for data speeds in Russia to a mobile device, and on specific examples we saw how close we are to the daily use of 5G solutions. MTS is currently building a data transfer network and testing various solutions to ensure we’re ready for 5G standardization. We now hope in cooperation with our partners to develop an extended 5G demo zone for the major sporting event of 2018 in Russia, "said Igor Egorov, Director of Moscow region, MTS.

"The scalable and dynamic 5G network gives operators the ability to create many new services and generate additional revenue streams. The 5G network will ensure the automation of business processes and the transformation necessary for the dissemination of the Internet of Things, as well as the use of services such as VR and AR," added Hannes Ekstrom, Head of Customer Unit MTS, Market Area Europe & Latin America, Ericsson.

 

The following innovative technologies were used during the tests:

Multi-User and Massive MIMO with an array of transmit-receive antennas and the ability to simultaneously service several subscribers in one sector of a cell on the same frequency band. This significantly increases the data transfer rate and the efficiency of the frequency resource;

Beam Tracking, which provides user devices with a stable connection and the best throughput when moving;

Dynamic TDD, which improves the data transfer rate and the efficiency of using wireless network resources by dynamically redistributing the bandwidth when transmitting traffic in the downlink and upstream channels.

 

The trials are part of the strategic partnership between MTS and Ericsson within the framework of the agreement signed in December 2015 on cooperation in the development and implementation of 5G technologies in Russia.

Cooperation between MTS and Ericsson on innovation and 5G:

In July 2015, for the first time in Russia, MTS and Ericsson completed a test for an automatically scalable function of the multimedia messaging subsystem (IMS) in the cloud to provide voice services in the LTE network (VoLTE);

In October 2015, companies tested Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast technology on a commercial network for the first time in Russia. During the test session in Nizhny Novgorod, HD-quality video was streamed to an LTE-smartphone supporting LTE Broadcast;

In June 2016, the companies tested LTE-U (LTE-Unlicensed), demonstrating the aggregation of two frequency bands - 10 MHz in the 1800 MHz band of LTE and 20 MHz in the unlicensed 5 GHz band at Wi-Fi access points. During the tests, the data transfer rate reached 200 Mbit / s;

In June 2016, the companies signed an agreement on the supply of software for the modernization of MTS’ network. As part of the agreement, which will run until 2019, the companies will implement IoT technology solutions and test extended GSM technology (EC-GSM-IoT).

MTS LAUNCHES AN INNOVATIVE CAR INSURANCE PROGRAM

MTS and INTOUCH insurance company have launched the first in the Russian market IoT-based insurance program Smart Kilometers which will allow “weekend drivers” to save up to 25% of the cost of the non-obligatory car insurance.

“Weekend drivers” are those drivers, who do not use a car very often, and can now get a discount on car insurance through connected cars technology. When buying car insurance, the customer can opt in for a mileage limit to receive an appropriate discount. Drivers, who drive less than six thousand kilometers a year, may receive a 25% discount of the total insurance price. Drivers whose mileage would be restricted to up to 10,000 km will get a 15% discount, while drivers who choose a restriction of 12,000 km will save 7% of the insurance price.

The program Smart Kilometers has been launched in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Moscow and Leningrad regions.

During the insurance period, the GPS tracker installed in the client's car will transmit the mileage data to a server. A client can control mileage through the mobile app or on his personal account on the website of the insurance company. ​​

"More than a third of all cars in Russia pass less than 12 thousand kilometers a year. Smart insurance will allow such drivers not to overpay for insurance and at the same time protect themselves from risks. Telematics insurance is an example of how high technologies bring tangible benefits to ordinary Russian drivers. For the insurance business, this is also a new level, which became achievable thanks to the cooperation with MTS, the leader in the M2M / IoT market. Our partnership in IoT allowed us to launch several smart insurance programs, based not on the fixation of the accident rate, but on the individual driving behavior - driving style and frequency of use of the car, "said Pavel Butenko, director of marketing and direct sales channel of INTOUCH insurance company.

Additional Information

The first smart insurance program in Russia was launched by MTS and INTOUCH in September 2014.  It allows to calculate the cost of the insurance policy through IoT technology and take into account the individual’s own driving style. The telematics sensor installed in the car measures parameters of the driver and creates his accurate profile. As a result, cautious drivers may earn back up to 20% of their insurance spending.

MTS is the largest provider of M2M / IoT solutions in Russia by the number of SIM cards. According to AC&M Consulting, MTS’ market share is 40%. Our smart insurance products won several international awards.

MTS MAINTAINS ITS LEADERSHIP IN THE RUSSIAN M2M/IOT MARKET

MTS is the leading provider of M2M services in Russia, according to the latest report from Advanced Communications and Media (AC&M) on the M2M/IoT market in Russia. By the end of Q3 2016,  43% of SIM-cards used in different M2M solutions in Russia operated on the MTS network. 

MTS leadership in the market is underpinned by innovative large-scale projects in the automotive and energy industries. Since mid-2013 MTS has been developing Smart Car Insurance, fleet management telematics solutions, enabling customers to reduce the cost of their auto insurance. Each vehicle is fitted with a small device that captures vehicle performance statistics and driver behavior data, which is then transmitted over the MTS network. This solution evaluates customers’ driving behavior and allows insurers to determine the appropriate level of insurance premium based on the driver’s track record. Currently, around 30% of INTOUCH insurance contracts are being concluded with the Smart Car Insurance solution. 

In Russia today there are around 10 million connected IoT devices, a 30% increase from last year. These connections are found across many different industries, but are particularly prominent in the automotive and retail sectors. Many IoT devices are also used in housing & public utilities as well as the energy sector. The growth of the connected cars segment is a very promising development for IoT implementation in the mid-term, driven by the increasing number of potential users.

AC&M predicts that the Russian M2M/IoT market will grow at least 40% in 2017, measured by volume.

МТS AND NOKIA TEST END-TO-END IOT NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE

MTS, the leading telecommunications provider in Russia and the CIS, and Nokia, a global leader in the technologies that connect people and things, have for the first time in Russia successfully tested end-to-end IoT solution.  

Experts at Nokia and МТS have demonstrated an innovative Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) radio interface, that supports broadband and narrowband device connectivity with the use of new radio chip. New communication standard allows to connect to one base station tens of thousands of devices in difficult radio conditions and operate the devices for several years without batteries replacement due to the greater network capacity, energy efficiency, and high sensitivity of radio modules. 

New infrastructure provides fast, cost-efficient, and secure connectivity, as well as integration, management and maintenance of all types of devices with different requirements, such as probes, sensors, meters, and cameras based on single operator's platform.

The tests included such IoT infrastructure use cases as video and acoustic monitoring, industrial data acquisition systems, as well as "smart home" sensors integrated on a single platform.

"Our cooperation with Nokia in breakthrough technologies is gaining momentum. Recently, under our collaboration agreement on 5G and IoT technology development in Russia, MTS and Nokia set data transfer speed at 4.5 Gb/sec. Now, the two companies together have successfully demonstrated the end-to-end IoT solution in live MTS network. The similar solutions will be available to our corporate clients next year for application in different areas and industries including manufacturing, public utilities, management and control, security, smart homes and healthcare. As the leader in the Russian M2M market, MTS actively monitors the latest developments in systems integration market and strives to offer its clients the broadest range of integrated IT and telecom services on a turn-key basis, where IoT solutions will take the central place" - commented Igor Yegorov, Director, Moscow Macroregion, for MTS.

Test details:

The demonstrated LTE network segment included virtualized core and cloud IoT device management platform, as well as open interfaces for data processing in user applications. 

Platform's flexibility in connection to business subscribers, as well as integration with cloud-based resources were enabled by innovative SDN (software-defined network) technology, whereas for retail subscribers the universal PON / Ethernet gateway supporting IoT ZigBee and Z-Wave protocols was used.

 

MTS and Nokia collaboration in 5G and IoT

Under the collaboration agreement on 5G technology development signed in May 2016, MTS and Nokia are working on a strategic plan of 5G and IoT solutions implementation and will deploy a test 5G network during international sport events in Russia in 2018. 

In September 2016, MTS and Nokia successfully carried out the tests of 5G technology achieving a record for Russia 4.5 Gb/sec in 200 MHz bandwidth.

MTS AND SAMSUNG WILL DEVELOP 5G IN RUSSIA REGIONS

MTS and Samsung Electronics, the world-leading company in consumer electronics and hi-end IT, announced the signing of a memorandum with intention to co-operate in developing 5G technologies. Under the strategic partnership, companies will work on innovations aimed at implementing LTE-Advanced Pro network, developing the standards and deployment of 5G in Russia regions.

Partnership between MTS and Samsung will cover all the most promising areas, where the new generation network can be applied at most benefit:

introduction of the broadcast content delivery standard – LTE Broadcast (eMBMS), that allows to transfer the same piece of content to unlimited number of users simultaneously within the range of one or more base stations without losing quality and independently of the number of users online at the moment;

application of LTE in the IoT, in particular, the development of innovative radio interfaces NB-IoT and LTE-Machine, which allows for high network capacity within the long range from the base station or deep inside the buildings and low energy consumption;

the development of frequency aggregation technologies, multi-dimensional antenna systems (MIMO) and multi-channel TCP-connection, which will allow for higher data transmission speeds for the subscribers and higher network capacity;

Implementation of the new approaches towards the development of 5G, as well as field trials of the standard during international sports events in Russia in 2018.

MTS RESEARCH: M2M/IOT MARKET IN RUSSIA IS EVOLVING FROM SIM-CARDS TO BIG DATA

We are pleased to share with you a new report on M2M/IoT Market in Russia we produced using MTS’s proprietary data for H1 2016. The key highlihgts of the report are the following:

- Russian M2M/IoT market as of H1 2016 increased 33% from RUB 225 bln to RUB 300 bln year-over-year;

- Market growth has been driven by demand for Big Data solutions. Sales growth can be attributed mainly to devices and apps for analyzing big volumes of data (the share of which grew by 2 percentage points to 55%), software for data analytics (share growth of 1 percentage point to 27%) and to platforms for SIM-cards intellectual management (share growth of 3 percentage points to 20%). On the other hand, simple telematics solutions showed no growth and constituted 1% share in operators’ sales on M2M/IoT market;

- M2M SIM-card market in Russia grew in volume by 30% to 7.8 mln from 6 mln in the previous year. MTS’ share was 52%. MTS served 4 mln M2M SIM-cards by the end of H1 2016, an increase of 25% from H1 2015;

- Total revenue from IoT solutions increased by 1.7x, which reflects an increased contribution from service platforms and software, as well as from sales and maintenance of equipment carried out by MTS’s wholly owned subsidiary, NVision Group. LTE-based products show the highest growth, together with service platforms and software for data analytics from M2M gadgets; overall sales tripled last year;

- Traffic from telematics services on MTS LTE network by the end of H1 2016 increased by 1.6x from H1 2015; 3G-based solutions grew only by 7% and those using 2G-only network solutions decreased by 5%.

MTS AND ERICSSON EXTEND PARTNERSHIP IN 5G AND IOT

MTS, in partnership with Ericsson, has successfully tested a 5G technology solution - LTE-U (LTE-Unlicensed) - by aggregating two frequencies – 10 MHz at the LTE-1800 MHz and 20 MHz at the unlicensed 5 GHz spectrum range - at Wi-Fi spots. During testing, we realized speeds up to 200 Mb/sec.

This successful test on MTS networks is the first fruit from our agreement with Ericsson aimed at developing and implementing 5G technologies in Russia, which we signed in December 2015. Aggregation of two networks’ resources – LTE and unlicensed Wi-Fi spectrum - allows for better internet speeds indoors, better coverage and enhanced network quality.

In addition, MTS and Ericsson signed an agreement for the supply of software for upgrading MTS’s radio network through 2018, by which the companies will implement Internet of things (IoT) solutions for 5G networks and test radio interface EC-GSM-IoT (Extended Coverage GSM IoT), a technology which enables operations of M2M devices in operators’ current cellular networks.

EC-GSM-IoT technology significantly reduces the cost and accelerates the deployment of IoT ecosystems. Due to the economical use of the frequency spectrum, new radio interface allows for a multifold increase in the number of operating devices in the M2M network. Due to the increased sensitivity of radio modules, the technology provides for a seven-fold expansion of the range of devices, as well as a reduction in their energy consumption. The implementation of this technology does not require a large-scale replacement of equipment, and, in most cases, the software upgrade can be installed on the radio network nodes. This means that an operator can create an IoT environment virtually anywhere where GSM coverage is available and connect tens of thousands of devices within an area of one base station - where current mobile devices may not "access" a radio signal.

MTS MAKES HOUSEHOLD DEVICES SMARTER

MTS has signed a partnership agreement with Redmond, the producer of household appliances, aimed at developing and promoting services in the field of the “Internet of things” (IoT) to consumers. This unique strategic initiative reinforces the status of MTS as a leading innovator among telecommunications companies.

As part of the agreement, MTS will provide Redmond with smartphones with pre-installed software and embedded telematic SIM-cards with a special M2M-tariff that enables consumers to control their household utilities online. By promoting “Smart home” solutions MTS expects to increase both the number of active data-SIM-cards per household and the number of mobile internet users, since around 30% of smartphone owners do not currently use internet services. 

MTS installs SIM cards with a special M2M tariff plan in smartphones which will be sold with in household devices such as coffee machines, electric kettles, scales, multicookers and irons. The smartphones are kept in the apartment and used as routers connecting with the devices via Bluetooth. Customers will be able to monitor the status of these houseehold devices and remotely control their functions via a downloadable app. For example, users will be able to enhance household safety by checking whether an iron has been switched off or preventing children from switching it on. They will also be able to maximize comfort by remotely activating heating systems to ensure the home is warm on arrival.

Until recently, MTS has primarily worked on IoT with corporate clients and is the B2B M2M leader in Russia according to J'son & Partners Consulting. MTS serves around 50% of this market by volume of SIM-cards.

In H1 2015, the number of MTS SIM-cards sold for M2M vehicles increased by 20% y-o-y, reaching 3.2 mln. During the period, M2M SIM cards generated 18% of the total traffic consumed by corporates, twice as much as in H1 2014.
