MTS BOOSTS THE RUSSIAN IOT ECOSYSTEM WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE OPEN IOT LAB

MTS launched the Open IoT Lab in Moscow to demonstrate and trial a wide range of IoT solutions, bringing together IoT suppliers and customers to further stimulate growth in the market. It is the first of its kind in Russia based on NB-IoT (Narrowband-Internet of Things) technology and launched under the GSMA Mobile IoT initiative.

The MTS Open IoT Lab is an innovation space, where our corporate customers, partners and suppliers can explore current and future IoT-enabled solutions in a wide range of fields; from water consumption metering to city lightning management. The Lab serves as a showcase for the effectiveness of various pilot and commercial fragments of IoT-networks utilizing numerous sensors and devices that transmit data to clouds for further processing. The devices are managed and controlled through tablets and laptops, with visual reporting shown on large screens.

The IoT Lab presents the results of our cooperation with a number of vendors. The central part of the showcase is a test NB-IoT network in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands with four pilot products based on Nokia technologies: smart home solutions, smart city infrastructure monitoring and management, energy consumption control in housing services, and physical facility security systems. There is also a test NB-IoT network based on Ericsson solution for housing and communal services.

The adoption of the NB-IoT standard by regulators will further accelerate the commercial launch and rollout of IoT solutions across Russia. Due to the greater available network capacity, energy efficiency and high sensitivity offered by radio modules, the new standard will allow to connect multiple IoT devices to one base station, even in difficult conditions of signal passage and without the sensor battery replacement for several years. MTS is well prepared for the fast approaching connected future and has a wide portfolio of innovative IoT products and services for B2B customers, including solutions for smart home and smart city, monitoring and security, as well as production processes management and others.

Calling to “Explore IoT”, our Lab serves not only as a showroom for MTS IoT products in action, but also as a real laboratory to rise tomorrow’s IoT products. It is designed to provide our partners and device manufacturers wishing to accelerate the development of connected devices with access to our facilities at no cost. They can bring their early stage projects or solutions to our Lab for testing and receiving first-hand operational experience. MTS IoT experts are also available in the Lab for support.

· MTS is the pioneer in M2M field in Russia. MTS was the first operator to introduce the first M2M tariff plan. It was also the pioneer to launch Smart Metering service.

МТS AND NOKIA TEST END-TO-END IOT NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE

MTS, the leading telecommunications provider in Russia and the CIS, and Nokia, a global leader in the technologies that connect people and things, have for the first time in Russia successfully tested end-to-end IoT solution.  

Experts at Nokia and МТS have demonstrated an innovative Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) radio interface, that supports broadband and narrowband device connectivity with the use of new radio chip. New communication standard allows to connect to one base station tens of thousands of devices in difficult radio conditions and operate the devices for several years without batteries replacement due to the greater network capacity, energy efficiency, and high sensitivity of radio modules. 

New infrastructure provides fast, cost-efficient, and secure connectivity, as well as integration, management and maintenance of all types of devices with different requirements, such as probes, sensors, meters, and cameras based on single operator's platform.

The tests included such IoT infrastructure use cases as video and acoustic monitoring, industrial data acquisition systems, as well as "smart home" sensors integrated on a single platform.

"Our cooperation with Nokia in breakthrough technologies is gaining momentum. Recently, under our collaboration agreement on 5G and IoT technology development in Russia, MTS and Nokia set data transfer speed at 4.5 Gb/sec. Now, the two companies together have successfully demonstrated the end-to-end IoT solution in live MTS network. The similar solutions will be available to our corporate clients next year for application in different areas and industries including manufacturing, public utilities, management and control, security, smart homes and healthcare. Test details:

The demonstrated LTE network segment included virtualized core and cloud IoT device management platform, as well as open interfaces for data processing in user applications. 

Platform's flexibility in connection to business subscribers, as well as integration with cloud-based resources were enabled by innovative SDN (software-defined network) technology, whereas for retail subscribers the universal PON / Ethernet gateway supporting IoT ZigBee and Z-Wave protocols was used.

 

MTS and Nokia collaboration in 5G and IoT

Under the collaboration agreement on 5G technology development signed in May 2016, MTS and Nokia are working on a strategic plan of 5G and IoT solutions implementation and will deploy a test 5G network during international sport events in Russia in 2018. 

In September 2016, MTS and Nokia successfully carried out the tests of 5G technology achieving a record for Russia 4.5 Gb/sec in 200 MHz bandwidth.

MTS AND NOKIA REACH RECORD-BREAKING INTERNET SPEEDS IN RUSSIA USING 5G

MTS and Nokia announce successful results that reached record-breaking Internet speeds of 4.5 GB/sec at 200 MHz during 5G trials in Russia.

During trials in MTS’s laboratory, in the presence of journalists, a video clip filmed in 8K Ultra HD (7680x4320) quality on Harley Days festival in Saint-Petersburg, was streamed live on big screen using Nokia equipment, while the guests enjoyed the experience enhanced by Virtual-Reality headsets.

The maximum downlink speed was 4.5 GB/sec, meaning that a 1GB file can be transferred in less than 2 seconds. That entails that a CD-album in Hi-Fi quality can be downloaded in less than 1.5 seconds and a full-HD 1-hour video film can be downloaded in 14 seconds.

The tests were carried out on Nokia’s AirFrame and AirScale equipment using 4.65-4.85 GHz spectrum through two aggregated 100 MHz transmitters in the same configuration as would be used in a commercial deployment in a high density environment. For the first time in Russia, a MIMO 8x8 technology was used with 8 antennas on each of the devices and with the support of multi-channel video streaming. This technology increased data transmission  speed by times when compared to current LTE-standards.

NOKIA AND MTS GROUP TO COLLABORATE ON IOT AND 5G IN RUSSIA

MTS and Nokia have signed a collaboration agreement that will create a strategic path to the realization of 5G technology. The companies will deploy a test network during an international sports event in Russia in 2018.

MTS has outlined a roadmap to evolve its networks to 5G, among other things in order to be prepared to release the full potential of the growing segment of the Internet of Things, that not only create technological challenges, but also opportunities, for new services and applications.

 

Together with Nokia, MTS Group will develop test projects that leverage 4G technologies such as LTE-Advanced Pro as well as 5G to enable faster speeds, lower latency and new spectrum efficiencies. In 2018, the two companies will implement a 5G test network in a Russian football stadium to allow fans to experience innovative video and other services during the major event being staged there.
