On May 24-26, MTS took part in St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2018, an annual Russian business event that brings together senior executives of major Russian and international companies, investors and political leaders. At the forum, MTS announced news on cooperation with its partners and signed a number of agreements with Russia’s regions to boost their digital development.

MTS and SAP launched the Center for Expertise of Integration Solutions for Retail

MTS is one of the few companies that independently develop and maintain the vast majority of software used to run their own business. We are building up necessary IT competencies within the company and then offer best practices for the development of our corporate clients.

MTS and SAP, a world leader in enterprise applications in terms of software and software-related service revenue, announced the launch of the Center for Expertise of Integration Solutions for Retail to improve MTS’s business efficiency and identify new areas of profitability growth both for our own operations, as well as those of our corporate clients.

The first stage of cooperation assumes delivery of software that allows MTS Retail to improve business process management. MTS purchased SAP for Retail, solution for automating retail business, SAP Process Mining by Celonis for analyzing the company's business processes, and SAP HANA data storage and processing platform.

At the next stage, MTS intends to expand its portfolio of digital solutions offered to corporate clients with new products developed jointly with SAP and provide a full range of services for systems integration.

A set of tools provided by Nokia IMPACT allows the customer to create and implement secured IoT solutions in a short space of time. The security feature provides protection to both personal data and devices themselves. The open interface makes it possible to integrate this platform with third-party applications and devices.

MTS and Huawei will create a multimedia platform for innovative TV products

MTS is actively focused on the entertainment segment. Recently, we entered the e-ticketing and e-sports markets. In the TV and video content broadcasting segment, MTS has been maintaining its leadership for many years. At SPIEF, MTS tied up with Huawei to create a unified multimedia platform to develop MTS TV products further, including mobile, cable, satellite TV and IPTV. The transition to a new platform will accelerate introduction of innovative solutions in MTS TV services and their integration with other products offered by MTS and its partners. MTS intends to invest RUB 2.5 bln in the project. We expect that in the next five years the project will double the number of TV channels in HD and UltraHD format, and triple the overall number of available films and series. The transition of all MTS TV services to the new platform is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

MTS is the first mobile operator in Russia to launch an integrated IoT platform on national scale. Our IoT platform provides an integrated solution to manage objects embedded with network connectivity and pro-actively monitor IoT-enabled equipment performance. The platform has an open API (application programming interface) and supports various data networks. Accordingly, our clients’ existing equipment and IT systems can be directly connected with up-to-date sensors, cameras, robots and programs. The objects connecting to the platform can be managed from a single center, regardless of their location, which will be of substantial benefit to many of our clients in Russia who have operations in the areas that are traditionally difficult to reach.

MTS is the first mobile operator in Russia to create an IoT platform of this scale. Having pioneered the Machine-to-Machine communications in Russia with the introduction of the first M2M tariff, we are confident that this new offering will be in strong demand by the market.

Developing our own IoT platform is another step in the MTS strategy to be the go-to provider in helping business customers adapt quickly and efficiently to the fast-changing requirements of the digital economy, reduce their costs and bring their operations to a new level. For government customers, our IoT platform can become a driver for development of smart cities, smart grids and intelligent transportation.

In addition to being the largest telecom company in Russia, MTS has consistently been the clear leader in the Russian IoT market by number of connected devices. In the coming years, we will strengthen our presence in the IoT segment through open source platforms, cloud applications and the introduction of the Internet of things at any scale - from small stores, to large factories, cities and federal networks.

Our IoT architecture can support equipment across a variety of industries including manufacturing, energy and diversified service companies. The platform is also applicable for integrated IoT solutions for agriculture, logistics, commercial real estate and other businesses. Our equipment monitoring system allows our clients to anticipate wear-and-tear as well as potential malfunctions before the deterioration reaches a critical stage. Notifications can be sent via the client’s computer system, but also by SMS and e-mail. This will substantially reduce cost of maintenance and prevent losses related to equipment failure.

The platform also includes an integrated and comprehensive “Smart Metering” solution, replacing an earlier system using telematics enabled M2M SIM cards. MTS is a pioneer among Russian telecom operators to launch this service. One of the real business cases is the implementation of Smart Metering from MTS for a vegetable storage. Our solution allows our client to control the temperature and moisture level in the boxes where the vegetables are stored. As a result, the customer is confident in the storage conditions and the percentage of spoilage has decreased.

Cyber security is always at the core of all our technological innovation. Connected to secure communication channels, our IoT sensors and controllers can send data to a fully protected MTS cloud, where they are processed in real time and then sent to secure cloud storage. Equipment monitoring and reports generation can be done in a web user interface or in standard programs by connecting them to the MTS IoT platform using API procedure. MTS IoT platform uses secure SSL and HTTPS encryption protocols, as well as a network antivirus and a cyber threat protection center.

MTS in the IoT market

MTS is the leader in the IoT market in Russia in terms of the number of telematics SIM cards, according to AC&M research in 2016. MTS is also the first telecommunications company in Russia that regularly promotes the IoT-based product portfolio in the national scale. In 2009, MTS offered its customers the first telematics solution for vehicle monitoring. In 2011, we launched "M2M Manager" solution, which allows any device in real time to configure and monitor the MTS network, the work of various M2M-equipment. In 2016 and 2017, MTS tested NB-IoT and LPWAN technologies and deployed the IPv6 architecture on the network, which allows almost unlimited number of devices to be connected to the Internet.

MTS and INTOUCH insurance company have launched the first in the Russian market IoT-based insurance program Smart Kilometers which will allow “weekend drivers” to save up to 25% of the cost of the non-obligatory car insurance.

“Weekend drivers” are those drivers, who do not use a car very often, and can now get a discount on car insurance through connected cars technology. When buying car insurance, the customer can opt in for a mileage limit to receive an appropriate discount. Drivers, who drive less than six thousand kilometers a year, may receive a 25% discount of the total insurance price. Drivers whose mileage would be restricted to up to 10,000 km will get a 15% discount, while drivers who choose a restriction of 12,000 km will save 7% of the insurance price.

The program Smart Kilometers has been launched in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Moscow and Leningrad regions.

During the insurance period, the GPS tracker installed in the client's car will transmit the mileage data to a server. A client can control mileage through the mobile app or on his personal account on the website of the insurance company.

"More than a third of all cars in Russia pass less than 12 thousand kilometers a year. Smart insurance will allow such drivers not to overpay for insurance and at the same time protect themselves from risks. Telematics insurance is an example of how high technologies bring tangible benefits to ordinary Russian drivers. For the insurance business, this is also a new level, which became achievable thanks to the cooperation with MTS, the leader in the M2M / IoT market. Our partnership in IoT allowed us to launch several smart insurance programs, based not on the fixation of the accident rate, but on the individual driving behavior - driving style and frequency of use of the car, "said Pavel Butenko, director of marketing and direct sales channel of INTOUCH insurance company.

"MTS is one of the world's pioneers developing products in IoT segment. We are constantly increasing the number of intelligent solutions and are open to interacting with companies from different industries and prepared to improve business performance through the use of M2M / IoT technologies. The investments that MTS has made in the modernization of our network in recent years have made it possible to create a universal environment for the IoT development. We provide our partners with reliable access to the network and data protection in most parts of the country. This allows us to attract leading vendors and to develop innovative IoT-based services for customers. Transport monitoring and smart insurance are excellent examples of such services, which have already gained popularity, "said Elena Nechai, Director, Marketing and Product Marketing at MTS.

Additional Information

The first smart insurance program in Russia was launched by MTS and INTOUCH in September 2014.  It allows to calculate the cost of the insurance policy through IoT technology and take into account the individual’s own driving style. The telematics sensor installed in the car measures parameters of the driver and creates his accurate profile. As a result, cautious drivers may earn back up to 20% of their insurance spending.

MTS is the largest provider of M2M / IoT solutions in Russia by the number of SIM cards. According to AC&M Consulting, MTS’ market share is 40%. Our smart insurance products won several international awards.

MTS launches the Innovation Center, a department that brings a new approach to business development through the launch of new products and services. The Center uses a flexible methodology for service development (the agile-methodology). The establishment of the Innovation Center will enable the timeline for launching new products to be reduced by 3-4 times.

The agile-methodology assumes an interactive development of services, with a dynamic formation of tasks and execution by a team of experts with diverse profiles. Agile-teams are at the heart of the organizational structure of the Innovation Center. For each single project, a unique group is formed with employees from the company’s various departments to work exclusively on it - from the research stage to its commercial launch. The Innovation Center will unite the expertise of the entire MTS Group. The project teams will include experts from MTS, MTS Bank, NVision Group, MGTS and other subsidiaries. In order to reduce the timeline for introduction of new services to the market the company is also simplifying the key business-processes involved in their development.

The pioneer projects of the Innovation Center will be in the area of Cloud Services and e-Health.

Vladimir Khrenkov has been appointed as the head of the new department. Prior to this, he served as a Divisional Director within the Strategy, M&A and Corporate Development Department. The Innovation Center is under the direct supervision of MTS’s President.

“MTS is not a traditional telecom operator anymore,” states Vladimir. Nowadays, we are successfully working in complementary areas such as IT. We offer a broad pool of proprietary mobile apps and services to our corporate clients at the crossroads of IT and telecommunications. These and other services beyond standard telecom products look promising. Such transformation assumes a faster response to changes in the dynamic markets where we operate. By launching our own Innovation Center, we are choosing a distinctive approach to service development through a combination of expertise, experience and professionalism under the leading telecommunications company in Russia with the simplicity of a start-up business process.”

MTS will launch a new, easy-to-use, payment system, allowing customers to leave their cash and bank cards at home.  MTS subscribers will be able to make payments from their mobile accounts in a variety of stores or cafés. The system requires customers to provide their mobile number to the cashier and the transaction will then be confirmed by SMS. The designated stores will have to use special MTS POS-terminals, although MTS will gradually integrate this payment service into traditional POS-terminals that are in current use.

MTS will earn a commission from every transaction while increasing its share of loyal customers, given that the churn rate is 25% lower among customers using both mobile and financial services.

The service will be introduced in Moscow and, by the end of the year, in Ekaterinburg.

In 2015, the mobile commerce turnover from MTS mobile accounts increased to RUB 14.6 bln from RUB 12.8 bln in 2014, while the number of users increased from 2.6 mln in 2014 to 3.1 mln in 2015.

IBM’s Smarter Planet Blog recently discussed a survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and IBM’s Institute for Business Value on cloud use in the enterprise. Breaking down the evolution of cloud technology into three phases, they declare we’ve now entered the “innovation phase,” characterized as:

1. Taking cost out of the data center via increased utilization of computing resources;

2. Using cloud services to improve business processes and operational effectiveness; and

3.  Innovating–using the cloud to enable new business models and to try them out quickly and inexpensively.

Results from the survey of nearly 600 business and IT leaders:

“Cloud uptake continues at a rapid pace. More than 70% of the respondents said their organizations are piloting, adopting or achieving substantial benefits from cloud computing. Asked what they expect three years hence, that number tops 90%. Even more interesting are the results pointing to innovation as a major goal. Only about 15% said they’re using clouds to create new business opportunities or transform the way they do business today. That number pushes towards 50% in the three-year time horizon.”

Even in these early days of cloud innovation, MTS has already ventured in this market launching a SaaS (Software as a Service) portal in Belarus, where MTS non-consolidated subsidiary operates. The portal, launched in partnership with NEC Corporation, one of the world's leading providers of enterprise business solution, offers SMEs and private customers access to a variety of software products in the cloud. It allows users to reduce costs related to purchasing, installing, upgrading and servicing software. The software bundle includes “1C enterprise”, accounting and ERP software, an application for sending SMS to the contacts base and building promotional web-sites optimized for mobile phones, a basic service for video-conferences on PCs, and a video conferencing service for business customers with enhanced functionality.

By virtue of this project, MTS can test the waters before entering the Russian market for cloud services that – though fairly small today – is expected to grow up to $1.2 billion by 2015 according to IDC forecasts.
